The British Columbia Teachers' Federation (BCTF), located on the unceded ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Səlil̓w̓ətaɬ/Selilwitulh, and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nations since 1917, is a union of professionals representing over 51,000 Kindergarten to Grade 12 public school teachers throughout the province of BC.

The BCTF office building is situated in close proximity to the Canada Line and other major transit routes in a central Vancouver location. This is an in-person position based out of 550 West 6th Avenue, in Vancouver.
Function and purpose
The Senior Accountant, Finance and Operations oversees the overall accounting functions and financial analysis of the Salary Indemnity Trust (SIT) and provides oversight for the BCTF Staff Pension Plan and Building Operation statements. They also support the accounting needs of other entities, including the BCTF building and the BCTF Assistance Society. Additionally, the Senior Accountant, Finance and Operations is responsible for managing tax compliance and leading the development and improvement of accounting and reporting systems.
Principal duties and responsibilities
- Prepares annual financial statements for the Salary Indemnity Fund (SIF) for submission to auditors and Federation members.
- Responsible for overseeing the processing of building company transactions, liaising with the Facilities Manager as required; prepares internal monthly statements and annual financial statements for audit.
- Acts as the departmental technology representative, co-ordinating and interacting with external and departmental staff on technology issues and initiatives.
- Provides secondary approval for electronic transactions for SIF transactions, including approval of invoices, transmission of electronic funds transfers, posting of transactions, and cheques.
- Development and maintenance of Jet Reports ensuring accuracy and reliability.
- Approves all expenditures of $5,000 or more ensuring compliance with budget, subcode structure and authorization procedures.
- Monitors issuance of taxable benefits for Teachers Teaching on Call (TTOCs), program speakers and ensures that T4s are issued by Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) deadlines.
- Approves and posts all salary and banking general ledger journals.
- Prepares monthly and quarterly statutory remittances ensuring timely electronic reporting and remittance.
- Assembles, compiles, and analyses a wide variety of financial, budgetary, and statistical information for Federation members, committees, and staff; prepares reports, statements and analytical summaries.
- Works with the Controller to prepare and deliver training to other departmental staff pertaining to accounting issues.
- Manages Fixed Asset subledger creating new assets and retiring fully depreciated assets as required.
Required experience
- five (5) or more years of current experience as a Senior Accountant
- demonstrated experience in managing technological initiatives and improvements
- experience supervising and co‑ordinating accounting work
- experience with Windows based enterprise resource accounting software (ERP), including related report writing software
- high level of proficiency and skill in the use of Excel spreadsheets including macros.
Required education/training
- University degree in business administration or commerce
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation.
